RSS Syndication – Tips to Avoid Spam

RSS Syndication is a program which allows for publishers to build out their websites with an RSS feed that provides information in a modular fashion to other publishers. This feeds is typically used to include comments from people and information on how to use a particular product or service.

Syndication can be used in many ways to help increase traffic to your website, but the most obvious is by adding comments on blogs and articles. While this is a good way to get your name out there, it also puts you at risk of ending up with spam comments. How can you avoid that?

Facebook will use the syndication feed to read and rate comments on your profile. This means that if you’re writing a comment to one of your friends’ status or article, you have to provide a link back to your profile to help keep Facebook from reading your entire profile. When building your RSS feed, be sure to include some information about how readers can find you and your profile. For example, Google Reader is a good choice for a standard syndication feed, so try to use this as a model for what you want your feed to look like.

Another tip to help avoid unwanted spam is to have a “comments” field where people can leave a unique and relevant comment about your content. For example, let’s say you wrote an article about RSS syndication, you’d place a link to your RSS feed in the “comments” section.

As long as you provide good quality content, this is usually all you need. It is the people who leave people’s comments that can cause problems if they are being posted by spammers, so try to avoid this by including keywords that will be helpful to your reader, like RSS article.

One of the most common mistakes that many bloggers make is to automatically add the “comments” button to every post they write. Since it’s not uncommon for bloggers to write a bunch of posts, they put them all into one big comment section, where they have to manually add a “comments” link. If you want people to leave comments, have a button on your blog that lets people leave comments without leaving a spammy comment.

You can always add a text link to your RSS feed. After all, isn’t that what it’s there for – comments.
